Are You the Cold Turkey-type?

Learn MORE about what kind of quitter you are. What’s the best way for you to change your unhealthy habits? If you don’t know, figure it out soon because it could be the most important step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Main Course

There are 2 main types of “quitters”:

(1) Go Cold Turkey! This type of person finds it easier to “break” a habit by just completely stopping the unhealthy activity. For instance, she may decide, “Starting tonight, I will stop eating ice cream while I watch TV at night.”

Those who are successful with this strategy tend to be very disciplined or highly motivated (i.e. upcoming wedding, class reunion), but oftentimes that are unable to maintain abrupt lifestyle changes over the long haul.

(2) Take It Easy. Those who like to gradually “change” habits tend to take more time to make slower lifestyle changes. Example: “I’m going to switch to low-fat frozen yogurt, and I’m only going to enjoy it in front of the TV on Friday or Saturday nights.”

This is typically the preferred method for quitting because individuals can typically maintain small gradual changes over time.

Dessert

What’s my type? Well, I’m a bit of a hybrid. My natural inclination is to take my time and really build new habits rather than just quit something cold-turkey. However, when I’m feeling highly motivated (i.e. planning to be seen in a swimsuit by other human beings), I find myself quite able of stopping my obsession with ummmm…let’s say movie theater popcorn…immediately.
